What I can use to kill ants that make their home in the prime of my boxes?

They are filling one of my pots of flowers that I glory seeds inches morning Is there something I can use or do to avoid this plague of my flower boxes? I've heard that cornmeal is good. Is it good to use? Would appreciate any information ….. ……. Also I have pets that might get around my flower beds and do not want to use anything that could harm my dogs.
